Disappointment with Google and Workforce Logic

coconuter - Posted on 11 August 2008

Google Inc. offers a few telecommute positions via a subcontractor known as Workforce Logic Services. They offer jobs such as Quality Rater and Ads Quality Rater. I had been applying for these positions for a couple of years now and only recently did they give me notice, and perhaps it was due to the quality assurance experience obtained from my most recent job.

My last attempt at getting their attention was apparently a success, as they replied with an application package, which I promptly filled out and faxed to them for processing. A key detail here is a certain portion of the application that requested a Gmail account to be created in the format firstname.lastname[AT]gmail.com, stating:
"Note: you must have a Gmail Account in order to receive the [pre-screening] exam...Please format your Gmail address as firstname.lastname@gmail.com..."

And so I did. Even though I had used my depoarch Gmail account to apply, I created an additional david.poarch account with Gmail per their instructions, which I assumed would be used upon receiving receipt of the sent documents and after notification from Google.

A few days later I received an e-mail (sent to my depoarch e-mail address) from a certain Tina Ngo from Google, requesting that I send in a couple of pages from the application package as they got lost in the fax transmission and thus were not received. And so I promptly sent in the specified pages (using my depoarch e-mail address).

A few days after that, I sent a follow-up e-mail to both Tina Ngo (Google) and Workforce Logic to check up on the status of my application and to confirm whether all required documents had been received, again using my regular depoarch e-mail address. I never did receive a reply or receipt confirmation from either party.

After a few more days, I resent my e-mail to WorkforceLogic, again using my depoarch e-mail address. Only then, did it occur to me to check the david.poarch address, and so I did. And lo and behold, a pre-screening exam had already been sent, and I had missed the exam submission deadline by a few hours. Not to mention that exam deadline extensions and reapplying were not allowed.

Quite frankly, I was very pissed off. All prior correspondence with Tina Ngo (Google) and Workforce Logic had been done via my depoarch e-mail address and yet they did not send me an update to that account nor did they reply to my follow-up e-mails. In addition, they never sent a warning message stating that all future e-mails would be sent to the new david.poarch address and no longer to the depoarch address I had used to apply. I was so upset.

How could a top-of-the-line workforce management company hired by one of the most successful companies in the world today fail to ensure solid communication with potential employees? Well, they did, and I'm sure this has occurred to others as well. With a name like Workforce Logic, you'd think they would have enough sense to prevent such miscommunication from happening. I mean, how hard is it to carbon-copy (cc) the depoarch e-mail address, which they had sent the application package to and had been corresponding with all along, before all of a sudden sending all new e-mails to david.poarch without prior notification! Unbelievable...

And just like that, I lost a wonderful telecommute opportunity (and perhaps one of the only legitimate telecommute opportunities existing) that would have sustained my family's financial needs while I attend college. Now, I'm stuck being unemployed again, having to search for a part-time job that will allow flexible hours with my schooling.

I liked Google, and still do, but this just makes my blood boil. I just can't help but include Google in my venting, as it is definitely involved in this by affiliation. And I hate to lash out on Google like this as I know Google employees (possibly Filipinos) like my site and view it everyday. I know this because I monitor my visitors and there are always some listed from Mountain View, California with domain name google.com. In fact, here was one visitor today:
Domain Name: google.com (Commercial)
IP: 72.14.195.#
Location: Mountain View, California
Operating System: Windows XP
Browser: Internet Explorer 6.0

Anyways, if this doesn't do anything for me, I hope it will at least help others who are trying to apply. Other applicants can either take this as a warning in order to avoid this kind of situation, or Google/WorkforceLogic can start using the carbon-copy field and/or give ample notification before pulling a "switcheroo" (and yes, that is a real word... type "define: switcheroo" into Google).

I am not really adept about that technology (telecommute etc.) but I understand what happened to you...

You were so confident that google and workforce logic would not commit such miscommunication.

I'm sad to learn that you missed the deadline because of the error. But I know that you're one of the most positive people in the world...You can find a better job..I believe in you.

I just want you to know that I am really inspired by your story...I am so happy that you have found your golden coconut (liza and thurman)
